Gary Lee DeWoolfson was born on November 14, 1946, in Philadelphia, PA as the second son of Bruce H. DeWoolfson and Elizabeth Ann Sinnet. At the age of 10, his family moved out to the suburbs and Gary graduated from Upper Darby High School, lettering in football, track and field, and wrestling. In 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Army so he could go to Vietnam and soon received a commission from the ranks.
After leaving Vietnam and the Army in 1970, Gary attended Temple University in Philadelphia using his GI Bill benefits and completed a joint degree in Math and Physics in three years. He then entered the Doctoral Program in Physics at the University of Pennsylvania, one of the most prestigious Physics departments in the world. While still a graduate student, he had a paper published in Physics Review, the premier journal in Theoretical Physics.
Gary is survived by two brothers, Bruce and Wayne, a nephew and a niece, Randy (Mychelle) and Nicole and their children Emily, Ashley, Kinder, Sara and Ryan. Gary was a loving member to his family and we will all miss him greatly.
